The Moments That Pass Too Fast β€” And Why We Started Capturing Them

One toddler, a baby on the way, and the realization that changed everything

By By Jennifer Kou, Macaroni Kids Covina-West Covina April 7, 2026

I have a toddler boy who is somehow already so big. I look at him some mornings and genuinely wonder where the baby went — the one who fit in the crook of my arm, who smelled like warmth and newness, who made the whole world feel like it had slowed down just for us.

And now there's another baby coming. And I know, this time, just how fast it all goes.

That's what finally made me stop putting off family photos. Not a milestone, not a special occasion — just the quiet, urgent realization that this is the season I'm going to want back someday. This exact one. The toddler who chatters nonstop and reaches for my hand without thinking. The bump that holds a baby I haven't met yet. The particular kind of full that our little family feels right now, before everything shifts and grows again.

It's Not About the Perfect Shot

I used to think family photos were about capturing everyone at their best — coordinated outfits, big smiles, everyone looking at the camera at the same time. And then I actually got photos taken, and I realized I had it completely backwards.

The ones I keep coming back to aren't the posed ones. They're the candid ones. The ones where my son is mid-laugh, totally unaware a camera is nearby. The ones where you can feel the tenderness of a moment that nobody orchestrated — it just happened, and someone was there to catch it.

That's what good family photography really is. It's not a performance. It's a pause. A way of saying — we were here, and it was beautiful, even on an ordinary day.

The Little Moments Are the Ones That Matter Most

We spend so much time waiting for the big moments — the birthdays, the announcements, the milestones. But if I'm being honest, the little ones are the ones that undo me.

The way my toddler says certain words right now that he won't say the same way in six months. The way he presses his face against my belly like he already knows his brother is in there. The afternoon light in our backyard. The quiet before the beautiful chaos of a newborn arrives.

These are the moments that don't make it into the baby book. They're too ordinary to think to write down. But when you have a photo of them — a real one, a candid one, one that caught the feeling instead of just the faces — you get to keep it forever.

That's what I wanted. Not just documentation. A way back to exactly how this felt.

Finding Someone Who Understands That

The right photographer doesn't just show up with a camera. They show up with intention — with an eye for the in-between, for the glance your toddler gives you when he thinks you're not looking, for the light that makes an ordinary Tuesday afternoon feel like something worth holding onto.

For our family, that was Julie Tran, a West Covina-based photographer who shoots in natural light with a candid, lifestyle approach that feels nothing like a traditional photo session. As a mom herself, she gets it — the fleeting nature of these seasons, the way you can be so deep inside a moment that you forget to actually look at it. She's the kind of photographer who pays attention so you don't have to.

Looking back at our maternity photos, I don't just see images. I feel that season all over again — the anticipation, the love, the particular sweetness of our little family on the edge of something new. That's everything.

Don't Wait Until the Season Is Over

If there's one thing I'd tell every mom in the thick of it right now — whether you have a toddler running circles around you, a baby on the way, a newborn who still smells like a miracle — it's this: don't wait.

You don't need a special occasion. You just need someone to help you slow down long enough to actually see what you already have.

These moments are passing. And they deserve to be remembered.
